U.S. Border Patrol Exam Study Guide

Newest Version:

This is why you came here. This is what is going to make the difference in being called for your interview possibly months ahead of others who thought they could wing it or do OK without this extra bit of help.  For some of you, it will make the difference between passing and failing. The price of this book is chump change when you think about the alternative.

Click on the graphic to order.

We realize that some of you are applying for multiple career choices.  That is why we are listing the Customs and Border Protection Officer guide here.  This is NOT Border Patrol.  CBPO's work at land border ports of entry and airports and seaports.

Read this and loved it. I am reading this one one.  Too bad she's married!  Oh yeah, me too.

LEARN SPANISH

OK, you know that you are the best qualified applicant the Border Patrol has ever seen, but how do you tell THEM that you are? How do you keep from looking like an idiot while filling out your application? I recommend that you click on the book on the left and read the review before thinking that you have all the tools you need to complete your OF-612. This book is highly recommended for those of you who are ALREADY AGENTS and those who are just getting started. Learn how to write effective KASO's. The book on the right will be useful for those who are still job shopping.

Musical Spanish - What a great concept! Using tunes you already know, you build your pronunciation, vocabulary and fluency.

This actually makes you LIKE learning.

English Grammar for Students of Spanish :
The Study Guide for Those Learning Spanish

My personal philosophy about learning Spanish is that you absolutely MUST have a good grasp of English grammar and composition before hoping to learn another language. This book will help you in that respect. If you are looking for something to pass the time between passing the written exam and going to the academy, this is your best bet.

Spanish Books

501 Spanish Verbs: Fully Conjugated in All the Tenses in a New Easy-to-Learn Format Alphabetically Arranged

I can't emphasize enough how valuable this book will be, not only while at the academy, but for years to come. My personal copy is getting pretty dog-eared. You get a lot of book for the money, and take a look at the Amazon sales rank and customer reviews!

The New World Spanish/English English/Spanish Dictionary

You have to have one of these.

May as well pick one up here while you're ordering.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to

Learning Spanish on Your Own

If you insist on trying to learn Spanish on your own before going to the academy, Idiot's Guides are usually pretty good. The combination of information and humor make them a good read.

Federal Jobs in Law Enforcement

This book has good reviews from customers who have bought it.

If you INSIST on applying with other federal agencies (and who can blame you?) these books may come in handy:

Treasury Enforcement Agent

If you are not strong in math, you will have serious problems with the TEA test. This book will help.

Amazon.com says this about the TEA exam guide: "Secret Service, Customs, IRS, U.S. Deputy Marshal, Alcohol Tobacco Firearms.  Three complete practice tests based on official exams, vital review of skills tested and hundreds of sample questions with answers and explanations, complete details on requirements, qualifications, contact information and much more." This is also a newer book published by LearningExpress.

Applying for Federal Jobs: A Guide to Writing Successful Applications and Resumes for the Job You Want in Government

Again, this is a book I have not used or reviewed. Click on the link above to take a look at the book or customer reviews.

Movies

Borderline

Charles Bronson

By far, the most realistic Border Patrol action on video. Some parts are a little hokey, like when a journeyman agent shows up from New York to patrol the border and can barely speak Spanish. Hmmmm, maybe that's not so hokey.

The Border

Jack Nicholson

Not bad action with a nice storyline, but it portrays a seamy side of the Border Patrol that is unflattering, to say the least.

Flashpoint

Kris Kristofferson

Good story, humor and action. I won't ruin it for you, but Kris gives a great one-liner that you'll never forget. I'll never forgive him for not shaving his beard to do this movie. It just ruined the whole effect for me. This is a surprising story that you will probably enjoy if you can get past the bearded Border Patrol Agent thing.

Other Books on the Culture, Geography, Cooking and Other Aspects of Life on the Border

On the Mexican Border (The Sugar Creek Gang , No 18), Good kid's book.

Illegal Aliens (Immigrant Experience). Read and learn about the people you will be working with on a daily basis.
